HAUTE MAMA: Ellie O’Mahoney

Ellie and Mark's Wedding-226a-XL

Our brilliant friend Ellie has been reviewing some of the top pregnancy treatments over the past few months of pregnancy. So we had to ask her, what have been your skincare essentials during pregnancy? Here she spills…. GT

Since getting pregnant and in fact before, when I was trying to get pregnant, I felt instinctively that I wanted to avoid ‘toxins’ as much as possible, whatever that means. The problem is, of course, that we’re exposed to man-made chemicals all day long. That fabric on tube seats? Plastic food packaging? Guilty. But where I could, I wanted to make the move towards more naturally-derived products.

Mama Mio is a brilliant start. It has shower gels, body creams, facial washes, in fact a full skincare range designed for preggos like me. They’ve got all the credentials – they’re free from SLS (a pesky chemical found in lots of mainstream beauty products), parabens, petrolatum, synthetic fragrance and colourants, xenoestrogens, PEGs, phthalates and glycols. Phew. I’m not sure what any of those things means but basically, what I do know is that Mama Mio contain no nasties.

I tried the facial wash and the Tummy Rub Oil. I loved the facial wash – if your skin breaks out into acne at the first sign of pregnancy, as mine did, Mama Mio packs a healthy punch at it. It contains gentle exfoliants and Tea Tree extract, plus probiotics to balance out the stressed skin. It also smells blinking lovely and no wonder – they blend five natural coconut derived cleansers to create it.

The Tummy Rub oil is gorgeous. At 35 weeks’ pregnant, I still have no stretch marks. God knows whether that’s down to the oil. In later months, I’ve been less than religious about applying it, but it’s far less oil-y, if that makes sense than other tummy oils, so you don’t feel like a grease-slicked whale after applying it. It also smells divine – there’s a theme here. Plus, getting your partner to apply it, as I did, makes for a really lovely, bonding experience with the baby/bump. When my bump turns into a baby in five weeks’ time I’ll really miss these gorgeous beauty treats.
